Patriotic 4th of July Rice Krispie Treats

While in the process of testing out desserts to serve for our Fourth of July celebration, I decided to give the tried and true rice krispie treats a shot.  I wanted to dress them up to show off some patriotism but still wanted them to retain their portability.  These fun star shaped rice krispie kabobs were the perfect way to cover all the bases.

I started out with these cuties by using my regular rice krispie treat recipe.  One bag of mini marshmallows with three tablespoons of butter go into the microwave for 1 minute, stir well and continue microwaving at thirty second intervals until it is all completely melted.  Add six cups of Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well combined.  Depending on how thick you like yours, pour into either a 8×8 or 9×13 pan (tip: cover the bottom of the pan with aluminum foil and use non stick cooking spray on top of that) and allow to cool.

Now comes the fun part…decorating!  If you used aluminum foil, simply lift the edges out of the pan.  Grab a star shaped cookie cutter and push it all the way through the rice krispies.

Grab some kabob sticks and skewer a couple of blueberries, followed by the rice krispie treat (be sure to put the stick through the very center) and then a strawberry on top.

These would look so adorable sitting in a Mason jar on a 4th of July tablescape.  They are also so fun for little hands to grab and enjoy while on the go.

I’m still undecided about what dessert I’ll be serving come the 4th, but I love this option.  It would be perfect for birthday parties too by adding some candy or a chocolate covered marshmallow instead of fruit you could change it up to match any theme.  There are tons of ways that you could personalize these, and they are all awesome!
