Create Your Own DIY American Girl Clothes Hangers

Both of my daughters have been sucked down the American Girl rabbit hole.  We subscribe to the magazine, get all of the catalogs we could want and then some, have massive amounts of clothing and accessories and of course, the dolls themselves.  As many of you know, American Girl items are adorable, well made and lots of fun, but what they are not is cheap.  I am constantly blown away by the cost of the tiny articles of clothing, and to be honest…I get tired of spending a fortune on dolls and their accessories.

When my eldest daughter asked for a closet for her doll recently, I knew that it was something that I could easily DIY and save myself some moola along the way.  Once the closet was complete though, we were left without hangers and that was a problem.  We needed an easy hack that my nine year old could help out with.

Enter these adorable DIY American Girl clothes hangers!

If you’ve got some popsicle sticks, hot glue and cup hooks you can make your own!  It is such a simple process and will take you just a couple of minutes to complete from start to finish.  For each hanger you will need three popsicle sticks and one cup hook.

Start by cutting into the middle of one of the popsicle sticks, taking out about 1/4 inch, trying to keep the two sides as even as possible.  Discard the middle piece.  Add hot glue to one full popsicle stick and glue the two sides on top, leaving the gap in the middle.  Next, glue the cup hook into the space that was left in the middle and glue one more stick on top, covering it all.  You’ll basically end up with a sandwich of popsicle sticks that looks like this:

  5. What a great idea for doll clothes hangers. I’ve been saving popsicle sticks to make terrarium furniture. Now I have another reason to save them. Thanks for the idea. Love it.

I made 18 of these hangers this week. It was an easy project, and I love the look of the natural wood hangers for American Girl dolls. I just have to figure out how to make hangers for skirts and pants.

  7. What a great idea. Will do some for my grand daughter.
