New Year’s with Kids

I’ll be the first to admit that I am a big homebody.  I love to stay in my own home and eat my own food, drink my own drinks, listen to my own music and not worry about putting on makeup or doing my hair.  My husband and I don’t go out for dates very often for that reason (he is an even bigger homebody than I am).  We love to have friends visit though and I often find myself planning  last minute get togethers for a mixed group of adults and kids.  That is the predicament that I found myself in today when I was trying to come up with a fun way for the kids at our New Year’s Eve bash to be able to “toast” the New Year without feeling left out of the celebration.  Thankfully a quick trip to my local dollar store turned up all of the inspiration that I needed to come up with a quick, easy, fun and cheap solution to my problem.

Why not let the kids fill their champagne glass with candies and cupcakes?  They’ll be much happier than just getting some boring old sparkling juice!  Here are the supplies that you’ll need:

Cupcakes and frosting (I cheated and used a box mix)

Candies (can be any color to match any theme – I used some bubble gum balls that I found at the dollar store)

Plastic champagne glasses (I found mine 6 for $1 at the dollar store)

Fun topper (optional – I’ll show you how I made mine here)

Bake and frost your cupcakes.  Fill your champagne glasses with a small amount of candy until it just covers the stem and bottom of the glass.  Set one cupcake on top of candy and top with a fun topper of choice.  I made mine using some “shred” that I had bought at Hobby Lobby for another project that never came to fruition.  I used the shred, some toothpicks and tape.

1) Pull out a small handful of shred and wad it up.

2) Wrap repeatedly around your toothpick until it is to the length and fullness that you like.

3) Secure the wrapped shred by tightly placing a piece of tape around the shred onto the toothpick.

Pretty simple stuff, but it adds a ton of life to your party and kids will love it.  They’ll feel special having their own adult glasses at the party, their own way to ring in the New Year, and most importantly, candy and cupcakes of their own!

  1. I love this idea, with a few alterations for my grandchildren. My grandson gets really hyper after eating s Ugarit from baked goods, candies etc. but, with fruit sugars he is fine, ín moderation. I would also like to break our unhealthy cycle f acting too many treáts. I think I will make this with mostly fruit, use foul lined cupcake wrappers, then I can sit a mini cupcake down in the fruit. I think it will still be beautiful and fun, but work for my grandchildren. Thank you for the original idea

  2. Nice share, its a bitter reality that on occasion of new year we mostly neglect kids and keep ourselves busy in our own party preparations. Its very important that we give time to our kids and also plan a celebration with them. I am planning to celebrate new year 2017 with my kids.
